The staff here at Dragon’s Rest want you to have fun and enjoy your time in the server. To make sure everyone can fairly do so we have laid out the following rules and expectations of our members. These rules can be changed by staff at any time.

This page is broken down into the following categories:

Server Rules

  • Religion and Politics may be mentioned in General Discussion but may not become a drawn out conversation or debate. If a member of the Council says it is over do not continue the conversation.
  • No insulting other members or their beliefs.
  • Do not use words that may be deemed offensive for race, gender or orientation sensitivity reasons (i.e. – N—-r, C–t, P—y, Q—r, F-g).
  • *NSFW content and excessive vulgar language is forbidden.
  • Heated discussions and debates may occasionally be tolerated as long as they do not restrict free and peaceful use of this server or violate the previous rules.
  • Any issues between members are not to be discussed on public channels but must be resolved through Direct Message with a member or members of the Tribal Council.
  • Decisions made by the council are final and may not be debated in chat. Any disagreement with decisions made by the Council may be submitted in #council_audience or to any member of the council for further discussion.
  • Occasional images or memes directly related to conversation may be shared in General Discussion. There are to be no GIF of meme competitions. Frequent or rapid posting of images, gifs, memes and videos must be restricted to their related channels.
  • Most General channels are for discussions. No spamming random words or letters in any channel except for #spam. This includes:
    • No screaming (ex: “AAAAA” “yeyeyeyeyeyeyeye”)
    • No replying with only emojis, images or GIFs for multiple responses.
    • No replying to a statement with a random word, letter or symbol more than one time in a row.
  • Tupperbot is to only be used for characters already listed in #characters , even in General chat rooms. Do not use tuppers from other servers except in Tupperware.
  • Excessive venting may be considered spamming at the discretion of the Council and may be grounds for a warning if it is deemed disruptive or excessive. We will not create a venting channel.

Character Rules

  • Characters MUST be posted in the character channel before you begin roleplaying. New members will not receive roles allowing for posting in roleplay channels until their character is approved.
  • Each member is permitted up to one (1) Dragon character and one (1) Viking character when first joined.
  • The Council holds the right to reject a character for any reason or to request changes to a character after approval
  • Sexual orientation is NOT to be listed in a character profile. While characters being lgbtq+ are permitted it may not be treated as a primary focus of a character, their past or personality. We are not a furry, lgbtq+ or dating simulator server.
  • For Tier 1 members, viking characters should be no less than 15 years old and dragon characters should be no less than 10 years old. The council MAY allow younger characters for Tier 3 members at their discretion however that is unlikely.
  • Established members may request promotion to Tier 2 Membership in order to create or adopt and use additional characters. Permission must be expressly granted by the Council otherwise additional characters will be deleted or considered NPCs able to be used by any other member in posts.
  • When creating an NPC dragon for a viking character, members are restricted to their tiers as if creating a primary dragon character. Similarly a Tier 1 or 2 member may not create a dragon serving a hunter without express permission by the council.
  • Be aware that your existing OC may not fit within the expectations of this server: All new characters must be realistic within the limits of the DRAGONS movie and television canon.
    • There should be no modern, unrealistic or unusual abilities that would not fit alongside canon abilities.
    • Excessively large and excessively strong characters are NOT permitted. Some variation is permitted but every character should be treated to a relatively fair and equal strength and size. This is why Titan Wings are currently not allowed. The council may determine that a character is acting too OP at any time.
    • Viking technology and knowledge should not be excessively out of place. No motors, aircraft, electric lights, guns or modern buildings or ships.
    • Dragon species appearance must follow canon without excessive variation. (i.e. slightly wider/thinner head, slight changes to shape and size of horns, thicker or thinner set, etc. are allowed. Obese dragons, differently shaped head or horns or otherwise drastically different body shape is not)
    • While many dragons offer many color combinations many others are also limited in colors available (i.e. night/light fury, sand wraith, hobblegrunt). Some variation is allowed as part of patterning however drastic variations may be rejected.
    • What is acceptable is up to the discretion of the Council, if you are unsure of an ability or color pattern feel free to ask.
  • If you desire to play a dragon character with a rider and/or a dragonrider:
    • You may develop your characters so that they are a dragon and rider team, but if you are a new member this fills your dragon and human maximum number of characters.
    • You also may team up with another member for this relationship.
    • A Dragon/Rider bond cannot easily be changed. Be sure that the decision is one you wish to make permanent.
  • No official franchise characters may be used without the express permission of the council, even as NPC’s. (This includes all characters who appear in the How To Train Your Dragon books, movies, tv shows or comics)
  • One of the dynamics of the dragon/human bond in the animated world is learning communication through body language. In almost all cases dragons and humans cannot communicate through speech.
    • Humans cannot understand ‘dragonese’ and most but not all wild dragons often cannot understand norse unless they have been around humans for a while.
    • Select dragons have been allowed to learn writing and some humans have been given the ability to understand dragons. This is for essential translation needs and such abilities must be approved by the Tribal Council and must take time to learn.
  • Characters created before and in violation of the rules have been updated may be permitted to remain however their existence may not be used to justify new characters not following these rules.

Dragon’s Rest welcomes two primary forms of roleplay: Standard Roleplay and Literate Roleplay. These two types of roleplay come with their own rules and expectations. There are also rules which apply to both:

Roleplay Rules

  • Be respectful of other players and their characters.
  • Do not control the actions of any other member’s character in your post. This includes stating whether a character was struck by an attack in stories related to fighting.
  • Hunter characters are NOT allowed on Dragon’s Rest island channels unless during an approve event, or in the waters immediately around those islands. Captures of DR dragons that are planned may be done off of the shore a ways, on other nearby islands, etc.
  • Dragon characters may plan failed dragon rescue attempts/captures and follow up rescue missions with hunters and other dragons, but unsolicited captures during rescue RPs are not permitted.
  • No Godmodding.
  • Do not make any changes to another player’s character(s) without their consent. This includes casual roleplay actions in OOC channels.
  • Keep discussion about your story, notifications that you are going AFK or comments about what is going on in the story limited to the #active-rp-discussion channel or Direct Messages when possible.
  • It is allowed to use the same character in multiple stories, especially if using the same character for both literate and standard sessions. The only rule regarding use of the same character is that stories cannot be taking place at the same time in-world.

Standard Roleplay Guidelines

What we call Standard Roleplaying is the common chat room format. With these sessions faster paced stories take place between two or more people with only a few sentences per post. These roleplays take place in any channel except for those listed as literate.

  • Players should strive to post no fewer than 8 words per roleplay post.
    • It is understood that some posts may be shorter however these should be very rare.
    • Posts such as “He was scared” or “She runs away” and smaller or single-word replies will not be tolerated.
    • There is no maximum number of words in standard, however long posts may prevent your ability to keep up pace with shorter posting players.
  • Posts may be written in 1st/2nd person (I, my, mine, you, yours) or 3rd person (he, she, his, hers)
  • It is the expectation of each roleplayer that the others who they are interacting with will attempt to put equal effort into the story.
    • Make sure you read and understand others’ posts before replying. Continuity is important. Do not expect to hear a conversation from across the village or in other parts of the cavern from where your character is.
    • A good format to remember when writing each post is “Reaction, Description, Action” – in other words, write how your character reacts to the others’ previous actions, describe expressions, movements or changes of setting, and then add your own action for others to react to.
  • While we have an international community and some may not be native english speakers/writers, it is encouraged that proper grammar and sentence structure be used even in short posts.
  • If you must end a session for the day, try to end on a pausing point such as going separate ways or going to sleep. This will make it easier for the other member to use their character with others while you are unavailable.

Literate Roleplay Guidelines

Literate Roleplay is a more formal shared-storywriting format which often involves multiple paragraphs. Some literate roleplayers will write their posts in a word processor and paste as multiple posts in the server due to Discord’s 2000 character limit. These have their own dedicate channels in the “Literate Roleplay” category.

  • There is a 14 sentence minimum for Literate posts. This is an absolute minimum and much longer posts are encouraged.
  • Posts must be written in 3rd person tense (he, his, she, hers, they, theirs)
  • Sentence structure and grammar are essential to these stories.
  • Thorough continuity is required. Be sure to read and re-read others’ posts to understand the actions and settings they have described.
  • Allow others time to come up with their posts – some literate roleplayers can take hours or days to respond.
  • Inability to follow these expectations will earn warnings and disciplinary action including removal from literate channels.

Member Tiers and Types

As Dragon’s Rest has grown, so has the number of dragon characters which would be considered rare in the HTTYD world or which require an experienced writer to properly write stories for.

To encourage better stories, improved writing quality and a wider variety of dragons in the population, a tier system has been put in place for our membership. Any dragons permitted to lower tier members before these rules were put into place will be considered “grandfathered” in place. There are four tiers of membership!

Tier 1 – New Members

New members are permitted use of their choice of 19 common species of dragon as well as viking villager. Look for “Tier 1” species in the Book of Dragons.

Tier 2 – Proven Members

Once you have proven your abilities and contributions to the Tribal Council, you may request to be promoted to Tier 2. These members are allowed access to additional characters as well as many more species of dragon including the coveted Fury and Mystery Class dragons. If the council does not feel you have shown quality or active roleplaying they may reject your request and provide suggestions on how you can improve before they will approve promotion.

The Council will be looking at the following when considering promotion:

  • Quality of Roleplay
    • Contributes details and leads stories when needed.
    • Posts are well written with attention to grammar.
    • Above average post length counts greatly toward promotion.
  • Amount of Activity
    • Regular appearance on the server in roleplay channels
    • Social activity in OOC channels will count but not as much as in RP
  • Time on Server
    • Standard Roleplayers will have been on the server for about a month.
    • Literate roleplayers have been on the server for at least one story or two weeks.

Tier 3 – Server Leaders

Server Leaders have proven themselves to be great assets to the server. Those promoted to this tier gain access to more dangerous dragons and other areas of the server dedicated to those species, as well as the ability to propose their own original species or subspecies to the council for consideration. They also receive the option to create dragon hunter characters at the Council’s discretion.

For this promotion the prospective members will have:

  • Been on the server at least 2 months.
  • Shown themselves to be highly active in the server, especially in RP.
  • Contribute regularly to roleplay stories and often begin new and original stories for others to join.
  • Continue to exceed the minimum roleplay expectations.

Tier 4 – Legendary Members

The top tier of regular membership is that of the Legendary Level. These members have access to creating characters from extremely rare species of dragon.

Legendary members will have

  • Been very active on the server at least 4 months.
  • Proven to be invaluable and versatile with their roleplays.
  • Have proven the ability to write for difficult and serious characters.

Other Memberships

There are a few other types of member in the server with special permissions:

Tribal Council – These are the server staff and their word is to be considered law. They discuss matters in private channels before making decisions that affect members and the server.

Core Member – These members are either on the council or have been around for a while, some of them founding members without the time to be moderators. They help come up with story ideas and assist the council with planning. Those members who show creativity and an interest in helping to grow the server sometimes are asked to join this group. It is a stepping stone for those who are interested in someday becoming staff.

Disciplinary Action

  • Any member of the council may issue a warning to any member of the server who violates these rules.
  • Warnings will only be documented if they become frequent or involve a serious enough infraction.
  • If a violation continues after a second warning on the same day, the member may be suspended from the server for one day.
  • If a member commits the same violation repeatedly over the course of multiple days that member may be suspended from the server for one day after discussion on the matter by a majority of the council.
  • If a member is suspended on 3 occasions for the same or similar violations they may be issued either a longer suspension to last no fewer than 5 days, or may be banned from the server at the discretion of and after a discussion of the matter by the council.
  • A banned member may return only if the council is confident that the banned member is sincerely willing to avoid further infractions.
  • Suspensions and Bans MAY be appealed to a member of the council ONCE for further discussion through Direct Message.
    • Members are only permitted one attempt for appeal on the behalf of another. Repeated complaints or insistence that the council reconsider after making your opinion known on the matter may result in warnings.
    • If further complaints or demands for appeal are made within a short period after after the appeal or apology is discussed and he ruling stands, additional time may be assigned to a suspension or the ability to appeal a ban in the future may be permanently revoked.
  • The Council may provide warnings for roleplay quality if a member repeatedly fails to follow the guidelines above. Proving attempts at improving will be taken into consideration.
  • Any member who self assigns the Literate role will be expected to follow Literate rules above. Failure to maintain 14 or more sentences, good sentence structure or story continuity may result in losing access to post in literate channels.
